Brain Rot! Regain Your Attention Mini-Course

Today’s digital world is intentionally engineered to keep young people scrolling. Students often struggle with screen habits not out of neglect, but because apps are designed with features that capture attention and encourage constant engagement. Drawing on themes from the popular Brain Rot! novel, this mini-course offers a fresh, story-driven approach that resonates with learners. Participants will uncover how persuasive design works, explore the role of algorithms in shaping choices, and practice strategies to strengthen focus and build healthier digital habits.

This 3-session mini-course is designed to help middle grade learners critically explore their digital habits. Drawing on the illustrated edufiction novella Brain Rot!, students investigate:

  • Attention hooks – the design features in apps that keep them scrolling.

  • Algorithm influence – how feeds are shaped and why certain content rises.

  • Attention resets – practical strategies to set boundaries and re-focus both online and offline.

The course includes ready-to-use lesson flows, chapter-linked discussion prompts, and printable worksheets that encourage reflection and peer conversation.
It is short, accessible, and built to fit into library programs, classroom workshops, homeschool settings or after-school learning.
